Screening vs identification
Screening and identification of synthetic diamonds are two different processes used to distinguish natural and synthetic diamonds. The main differences between them are in purpose, speed and price.
Screening
The purpose of screening is to quickly and cheaply filter out the suspicious stones that show signs of synthetic origin. Screening devices are designed for high -speed testing of a large number of samples and usually provide a simple answer yes/no about the likelihood of synthetic origin. These devices use methods such as fluorescence, thermal conductivity, electrical conductivity or visual imaging to detect differences between natural and synthetic diamonds.
Identification
The aim of identification is to clearly determine whether diamond is natural or synthetic. Advanced analytical methods are used to provide chemical and physical characteristics of the sample. These methods include infrared and Raman spectroscopy, X -ray diffraction, Photoluminescence and isotope analysis. Identification provides irreversible evidence of the origin of the diamond, but is slower and more expensive than screening.
While screening can test tens to hundreds of samples per hour, identification can take hours or days in case of more complicated analyzes. Screening devices cost thousands of dollars, while the devices for identifying up to hundreds of thousands.
Both processes are part of diamond verification. It is ideal to first use screening to sort suspicious stones and then identify to confirm synthetic origin. The two -stage approach combines speed, low costs and reliability in detecting synthetic diamonds.
