Description
A dichroscope is a basic gemological tool for an approximate assessment of whether a stone exhibits pleochroism – i.e. different coloration when viewed in different directions. The diameter of the optical part of the calcite dichroscope is 15 mm with a compact length of around 60mm, suitable for the field and on the workbench.
Main advantages:
- Pleochroism detection: allows you to visualize pleochroic colors, which can vary depending on the direction of view of the stone.
- Determining the optical axis: It helps determine which direction light is scattered in the stone, which is key to proper cutting and increasing the aesthetic value of the gemstone.
- Compact design: jIts small size makes it easy to carry and use anywhere.

Usage restrictions
-
The dichroscope is intended primarily for birefringent (anisotropic) stonesPleochroism does not occur in isotropic materials.
-
The result depends on orientation and lighting – therefore, it is important to rotate the stone during observation and combine it with other tests.
