Arete Tools gemological dichroscope

A dichroscope is a basic gemological tool for an approximate assessment of whether a stone exhibits pleochroism – i.e. different coloration when viewed in different directions. The diameter of the optical part of the calcite dichroscope is 15 mm with a compact length of around 60mm, suitable for the field and on the workbench.

Usage restrictions

• The dichroscope is intended primarily for birefringent (anisotropic) stonesPleochroism does not occur in isotropic materials. 

• The result depends on orientation and lighting – therefore, it is important to rotate the stone during observation and combine it with other tests.
